A group of business students at the KU Leuven University are particularly interested in investigating underlying factors that influence a company’s opportunities as well as the challenges they face in their business sector and ways to either benefit from those opportunities or overcome the challenges they’re confronted with. In this ever-changing and dynamic business environment, commerce between companies has become more and more complex. This complexity is a result of all the requirements set by the various parties involved in each stage of the procurement process. Although there exists electronic support to facilitate the commercial exchange between companies, the adoption rate of these support systems remains low. This is especially true in many smaller and medium-sized enterprises.
They decided to team up with the company Mercateo to further develop their previously conducted study on indirect purchasing, with the focus on German companies, and to extend their findings to the Benelux market. With the Mercateo Study 2017 (in partnership with Leipzig University of Applied Sciences), the company focused on indirect purchasing where they analysed factors that affect the degree of efficiency of the purchasing activities of companies in the German market.
Looking at the specific case of the German market alone, earlier findings have shown that small and medium-sized companies in particular can realise great potential through an increased use of digital procurement. However, many companies don’t estimate themselves properly equipped enough to tackle the challenges of digitalisation (Prof. Dr. Müller & Bollini, 2017). Now, how far off are companies in the Benelux? How receptive are those companies to the use of digital purchasing processes? These are the central, guiding questions that will lead our investigation. The overall goal for Mercateo is to see if the cost basis in the procurement processes and companies’ digital readiness is similar across different markets in Europe.
The aim of this study is thus to provide comparative figures to allow companies to measure their success in terms of process costs and their potential for optimisation and improvement within their organization. On a larger scale, this research should serve as a real, usable, and effective tool for companies to measure how far off they are compared to the European norm and furthermore how these companies can save potential and opportunities in their business operations.
